Public Engagement
I believe that what we do as scientists should have an impact outside of our own academic circles. As such, I am deeply involved in efforts to introduce the public to the study of linguistics and to science more broadly. This work has included local festivals and events such as the Tucson Festival of Books and Tucson Meet Yourself, as well as larger non-local events such as Family Science Days, part of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) annual meeting. For more on these efforts, see this paper authored by myself and colleagues, posted online through Public Understanding of Science (PUS).
